Goals for the Moore Foundation 2-year DISC grant:

  • production of a scalable kit that can be disseminated to events to help promote best diversity and inclusion practices (including distribution plan)
  • assessment of current diversity programs at NumFOCUS
  • identify best diversity practices and challenges, plus suggestions for new programs
  • creation of initiatives including programs to increase the diversity of project contributors

Shareable Events Kit Roadmap

  • April-June 2017
    1. Convene DISC Committee
    2. Compile and collate relevant research and existing data on diversity in open source and scientific computing communities, best practices for diversity & inclusion at conferences/events
    3. Assess what data it is we want to track and analyze, best approach to collect it
    4. Produce post-conference survey to collect data on participant experience and identity
    5. Begin implementation of post-survey at PyData conferences
  • July-September 2017
    1. Analyze research + data to identify barriers to full participation, gaps in research
    2. Collect feedback from previous PyData Diversity Scholarship recipients
    3. Develop initial list of best practices (proven and/or untested)
  • October-December 2017
    1. Draft first version of shareable best practices kit for events
    2. Circulate first draft internally among NumFOCUS stakeholders for feedback
  • January-March
    1. Post first draft version of shareable best practices kit for events to publicly (GitHub or wiki), solicit community input.
    2. Devise rollout method for testing specific recommended best practices and ensure we are communicating with conferences available for that.
  • April-June 2018
    1. ”Test” recommendations

July-September 2018

  1. Finalize recommendations, update public document
  2. Maintain

Status of Deliverables: (Oct. 6, 2017)

  • Scalable open source events kit
    • Initial best practices list formulated with notes
    • First draft of document in process
  • Assessment of current diversity programs at NumFOCUS
    • Previous Diversity Scholarship recipients surveyed
    • New data collection survey developed
    • Survey being used after PyData conferences (data collection & analysis ongoing)
  • Identify best diversity practices and challenges, plus suggestions for new programs

    • See above (survey) re: challenges
    • New programs: DISC Unconference at PyData NYC
  • Creation of initiatives including programs to increase the diversity of project contributors
