Funding

Extension:DynamicPageList (DPL), version 3.1.1: Warning: No results.

Actions (short term):

  • Compile database of funding models and governance structures. (action holder TBD)
  • List the active models of funding for NumFOCUS projects (action holder TBD)
  • Determine time spent by NumFOCUS staff and board on fundraising (action holder: Ralf)
  • Ask all projects to create and provide a list of things to spend money on if money is available (action holder: Ralf - coordinate with NumFOCUS staff)

Actions (long term) / ideas on establishing revenue streams:

  • Create project advisory councils for/with interested projects. Model is that this council does things like create a project roadmap, and companies can get paid seats on the council (and e.g. attend in-person meetings).
  • Certified scientific OSS branding. “Approved by NumFOCUS as sustainable open source ...”.
  • Establish a budget line item for open source support in company budgets. Rationale: this makes it a lot easier to increase spending over time.
  • At fiscal year end, contact key people in companies to check if there is budget (e.g. training budget) left over that can be channeled to projects. Note, this is not a suggestion to offer training - that’s not a good option for most projects. It is access to money that has to be spent, and is being controlled by people sympathetic to and/or reliant on our projects.
  • A “Joel test for OSS”. To be put on for example the NumFOCUS blog. 10 questions like “does your company provide time for employees to contribute directly to open source projects”.
  • Support for revenue stream generation: NumFOCUS right now does not have the capacity for rapid growth, this may need addressing.
